When I decided to move to the south 3 years ago, I considered many different cities. I chose to buy a historic home in downtown Durham because I was impressed by the city’s diversity, inclusiveness and creativity, and I wanted to be an active participant in its renaissance. Since then I’ve joined the boards of several organizations whose missions are to make central Durham a better place to live for people from all walks of life. In March, I was honored to be invited to fill a vacant seat on DCM's board at this exciting time in the organization's history. Serving on the Community Investment Committee has been both challenging and rewarding. If I am formally elected, I will head the new Community Advisory Board which will engage neighborhood residents in conversations about how DCM can best address issues such as food security, childhood obesity and healthy cooking.
Chuck Clifton is a financial advisor and the founder of Sycamore Financial Planning, LLC -- a firm that is committed to providing affordable financial advice to all. Chuck has been involved in the Durham community in a number of capacities including advocating for affordable housing, formation and leadership of neighborhood associations, coordination of arts events, and most recently in leading the effort to Save the Lakewood YMCA. These roles have allowed Chuck to cultivate a passion for being deeply engaged in Durham neighborhoods and communities. Chuck grew up on a small farm in Chesapeake, VA where he developed a rich appreciation of where food comes from and what it takes to produce quality, healthy food. Chuck holds two bachelors degrees from Virginia Tech, an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a masters degree in wealth management from Campbell University.
Beth Fowler has been a member of the DCM Board since February 2009, has served as Treasurer, and for the past two years as Board President. She works at UNC as an internet architect and usability specialist, helping public health and medical researchers develop web-baed interventions for their research studies. She has lived in the Triangle area since 1982, and moved back to Durham in 2003. Beth believes strongly in co-operatives as a model for economic and community growth, and is excited to be part of the effort to build a new food co-op in Durham.
My name is Frank Stasio and I am the host of The State of Things on North Carolina Public Radio; previously I was the host and anchor for NPR Washington. If elected, I would like to continue my work in bringing Durham Central Market into brick and mortar form. As we move forward, I want to work on policies that will guarantee a robust food access program to help make natural foods affordable to low-wealth families. Along with my work at Durham Central Market, I am involved with the Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham and the Durham Friends Prison Re-entry ministry. I work with four producers for my radio talk show, where all programming ideas are approved by consensus. I have found that the surest way to achieve excellence is by listening to the wisdom of others and taking the time to build consensus.
