Durham Central Market presents Durham History Paintings by Robert Olason !
Come visit the office of Durham Central Market (538 Foster Street) on Friday, Dec. 18th and view a new painting series by local artist, Robert Olason, about the history of Durham!
This series is titled: "Studies and Ephemera for 'The Birth of Hattie Scarlotte's Child'." At 7:15 pm the artist will make a brief presentation -- "Durham after Reconstruction: Hattie Scarlotte's Story" -- and answer questions about the project.
Pastels, watercolors and pencil drawings, along with tracings, newspaper articles and the like, used to prepare for, "The Birth of Hattie Scarlotte's Child," a 5ft by 8ft painting illustrating the moment the bodies of Hattie Scarlotte and her newborn child were discovered in the cellar of O'Briant's store, down in Smokey Hollow, a disreputable place. The other side of the tracks before the tracks were laid. It now lies beneath the American Tobacco Campus, near the south end.
The artist has advised that some of this material may not be suitable for children.
